Coming out of high school, Klein was a 3-star QB but only had one official offer from a Power 5 program, Kansas State. He took only one visit and committed to the Wildcats before his senior season. But soon, the former Iowa offensive coordinator turned things around after being hired in , and by the Wildcats were a perennially ranked team that was in the National Championship conversation. By the time hit, the Wildcats were once again ready to compete on the national stage.

After he moved backed to the quarterback position, Klein was positioned second on the depth chart behind incumbent starter Carson Coffman. Although reportedly giving the senior Coffman a challenge during fall camp, he remained the backup throughout most of the season but impressed in limited action.
